100,000 new residents for Bridgeport’s NEST Arts Factory building
Bridgeport CT,It is seven o’clock AM, high above rush hour traffic on I95, atop of
Bridgeport’s NEST Arts Factory building, some 100,000 of Bridgeport’s
newest residents are just getting ready to start their day. The newest
NESTERS or we should say HIVERS are Apis mellifera lingusta or Italian
honeybees and have their own ideas of commuting, well that is, from
flower to flower. These honeybees were brought there by beekeepers Vic
Mulaire and Marina Marchese. “These Bridgeport city honeybees seem to
be gathering more pollen than my country bee hives.” Marchese says with
surprise. Vic makes sure his new residents have plenty of water
available nearby, you see he is the owner of these buildings that have
been home to his world renown Tic Tac Toe children’s sock company since
1987. Recently, Vic has invited artist to set up studio space inside
and now honeybees to reside on top of his building. “Honeybees add a
little country to this part of town and honeybees are essentially
nature’s great pollinators, responsible for almost 80% of our food
supply,” he adds. Vic built and painted these 2 hives a bright red and
yellow color and in the wake of the honeybee mite infestations across
the country, he hopes to contribute to keeping the honeybees population
in control. “Unlike yellow jacks and wasp who come to visit your
BBQ’s, honeybees forage on only pollen and nectar, so they are
vegetarians” says Marina, who is a designer and has been a beekeeper
for 5 years. She sells honey and honeybee products under her own
company’s name Red Bee®/Rossape at the local Bridgeport farmers market
which is held each Friday in McLevy Green. Honey is nature’s oldest
sweetener and Both Vic and Marina are firm believers of the many
benefits of raw local honey and bee pollen. Many people come around
asking to buy large quantities of honey and bee pollen for their
allergies. As for now, NEST honey is reserved for these two beekeepers
but don’t bee surprised if you find Bridgeport NEST honey for sale in
the near future.
